“Glad you are doing this project. I found out my father’s “secret”…el secreto, in 1999 upon my first visit to Israel. His parents and family clan had been allowed to leave Spain as “Sefarditas” in the late 1890′s and immigrated to Zacatecas and then Jalisco, Mexico. It took me a year to assess what had happened to me, as I traveled Israel for the first time and finally confronted my father for the “truth”. We had never been brought up Catholic. Our minimal “identity” was based on what we knew as the “Old Testament”and lost Sephardic customs I never knew were Jewish. I felt I was “home” for the first time in my life. This has impacted and changed my life and that of my children. I wrote a book on our family history called, “Anousim Awake”…and do sharing and traditional and original Jewish singing. You can check my website and non-profit at www.Sephardimhope.net This has been a complicated journey that continues, but also one of joy and “full circle”. I am now a Conservative Jew and working to help other Anousim/Anusim connect to their lost Jewish roots and as an advocate for Israel.”
